How My Journey from Athlete to New Mom Taught Me to Embrace Femininity, Set New Goals, and Rebuild My Core

As a new mom who was once a dedicated athlete, the transition into motherhood can be both exhilarating and challenging. The journey postpartum is a phase of rediscovery, self-care, and rebuilding. I look back and think hmmm…what are my top six tips that I wish someone had told me when I embarked on this transformational path.

1. Embracing Femininity: A Journey Within

Your body, once a powerhouse of strength, has now evolved into a vessel of nurturing softness. These changes may seem unfamiliar or even uncomfortable at first, but they are a testament to the incredible journey of motherhood. Embrace your newfound feminine intuition; it is a force to be reckoned with and a vital guide on this new adventure.

2. Setting New Goals: Redefining Success

In this phase of life, it's crucial to set goals that align with your well-being as a new mom. Let go of the expectations of your pre-baby self and instead focus on nurturing your body and mind. Prioritize rest, self-care, and bonding with your little one. Remember, your worth is not defined by your physical accomplishments but by the love you give and receive.

3. Rebuilding Your Core: A Journey of Healing

Your core, the powerhouse of your athletic prowess, needs time to heal and reconnect postpartum. The abdominal area undergoes significant changes during pregnancy and childbirth, requiring gentle rebuilding and reconnection. Approach your fitness journey with a rehab mindset, focusing on gradual progress and honoring your body's healing process.

4. Building Back Holistically: Mind, Body, and Spirit

Transitioning from athlete to new mom is not just a physical transformation but a holistic one. Start with gentle movements that prioritize healing and alignment before progressing to more intense workouts. Listen to your body, hydrate, and nourish yourself with walks in nature. Remember, the journey back to your athletic self is a marathon, not a sprint.

5. Nourish Your Body and Soul: A Daily Ritual

Walking and staying hydrated are simple yet powerful practices that can benefit both your physical and mental well-being. Hydration supports recovery and vitality, while daily walks provide fresh air, movement, and mental clarity. Incorporate these into your daily routine as acts of self-love and rejuvenation.

Comparision is a thief of time & effort, that is what is present on social media, you must dive into your own journey and write it without the background of where you’re “supposed” to be. Seeing a professional athlete “bounce back” and start sprinting or playing at 3 months postpartum is somewhat the norm. And then we jump into well if she can do it, I can too… because after all we were athletes! Even seeing this once will have you underestimating and doubting yourself… turn it off. Most likely, you are navigating being a new mom, don’t have a full time chef, trainer or nanny; might be going back to work & are managing your hormones & home life! Sure post new pics & videos of your lil one; I started an Insta account for my nuggets lol, but then get OFF after you’ve shared your life so you can be present in your life.

As a mom who was once deeply ingrained in the world of sports and athleticism, I've learned that the journey back to one's self after childbirth is a profound process of rediscovery and redefinition. Embrace your femininity, set new goals that prioritize holistic well-being, rebuild your core with patience and grace, and remember to nurture both your body and soul every step of the way.

Motherhood is a transformative odyssey that requires strength, resilience, and self-compassion. As you navigate this new chapter, remember that you hold the power to redefine what success and wellness mean for you. Embrace the journey with an open heart, trust in your inner wisdom, and know that the path ahead is yours to shape and savor.

So here's to all the warrior moms out there, embarking on this incredible adventure of postpartum rediscovery and renewal. May you find strength in vulnerability, beauty in imperfection, and boundless love in every moment shared with your little one.

Let the journey from athlete to new mom be your most empowering transformation yet!
